Biography of Prof. Joachim Chinweike Omeje – The New Dean-Elect

Professor Joachim Chinweike Omeje of the Department of Educational Foundations has just been elected as the new Dean, Faculty of Education on the election held on July 30, 2022 at the Faculty of Education Lecture Hall, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The election was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, who was represented by Prof. Ezeani Emmanuel Onyebuchi, Prof. (Mrs.) Offorma Grace Chibiko and Mr. Oranu Paul Chekwudo. Based on the result of the just concluded election, Professor J. C. Omeje polled a total of 163 votes to defeat Professor O. O. Nwaubani of the Department of Social Science Education who polled 146 votes and Prof. F. O. Ezeudu of the Department of Science Education who polled 22 votes. Professor Joachim Chinweike Omeje is currently a Professor of Guidance and Counselling Education in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He will take up his new post as Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka on August 1, 2022. The new dean of the Faculty of Education has published over 106 peer-reviewed papers in Scholarly indexed Journals, 2 book chapters, and has also been involved in 6 subsidised research interests, as well as directed several PGDE, Masters and Ph.D theses.

Professor Omeje was a consultant for World Bank/STEP-B on Monitoring and Evaluation for South-East Zone Nigeria in 2012 and Niger State, Nigeria in 2013. He has acted as a Resource Person for FGN/Universal Basic Education (UBE), Teachers Professional Development Programme in May 2011, (1st Phase), October 2011 (2nd Phase), Bayelsa State Nigeria June 2011 (1st Phase), November 2011 (2nd Phase). Professor Omeje was also a Facilitator at different fora for UNICEF Zone A on harmonizing SEEDS with state plans for Orphan and Vulnerable children in August 2007 on emergency preparedness and response in Education for Education Officers in ‘A’ field office in October 2007, 2010 and 2011. Professor Omeje also served as a Facilitator for Org-learning consults professional Development USA in Collaboration with Faculty of Education University of Nigeria, Nsukka in enhancing Teachers Competence Train-of-Trainers Workshop on April 2008. He was a Resource Person on a two-day Workshop/Retreat on refocusing the principal-ship for the transformation of Secondary Education System in Enugu State, Nigeria on July 2009. He also acted as a resource person on Capacity building workshop on skills of teaching and Record keeping for Secondary School Administration and Management by Ebonyi State Nigeria Universal Basic Education Board October 2009. Professor Omeje has held several positions in Faculty of Education University of Nigeria, Nsukka such as: Member, Library Board Committee; Curriculum Committee, Postgraduate Committee; Environmental Committee among others. He is also a member of Several Professional bodies, some of which are: Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON); Nigerian Council of Education Psychologist (NCEP).

I am delighted to be elected as the New Dean of our dear Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I am looking forward to being part of this diverse, exciting and innovative community. It is an honour to be elected as the new Dean of our dear faculty, it is a unique faculty placed within one of the university’s greatest facility. I very much look forward to collaborating with colleagues, students and alumni within the University community and across the university, to move the faculty forward to higher levels of excellence and impact. I equally want to thank in a special way my co-contestants; Prof. O. O. Nwaubani and Prof. F. O. Ezeudu, for their spirit of sportsmanship before and after the election. It was indeed a very healthy and friendly contest with the duo...Thank you so much!! To everyone in our dear faculty, I say a big Thank You!  Your solidarity and show of support to me is unprecedented. As structureless as I am, you proved beyond every doubt that no structure is greater than the people and their resolve for a change. Thank you for ensuring that we emerged victorious in the election. It is a victory for the Unification, Grudge Free, Conducive Academic Environment in the Faculty of Education, and overall progress of the Faculty of Education.

Professor Dominic Ugwoke Ngwoke was born 22nd April 1956 at Umajiocha Village, Nru in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He has a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Chemistry /Education (1979), a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology (1985) and a Doctorate (Ph.D) Degree in Educational Psychology (2005), all awarded by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
He started his university teaching as a Lecturer II in the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1992. Since then, he has moved up the ladder from lecturer I (1995) to Professor (2011).

Prof. Dominic Ngwoke is the current Dean of the Faculty of Education (2018-). Along his career path, he has also served as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education (2006-2008); Programme leader and member of the senate, National Open University of Nigeria (2008-2009); Chairman, Faculty of Education Postgraduate Committee and Faculty Representative on the Board of the School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Nigeria (2010-2012); Acting  Head of the Department of Educational Foundations (2012-2013), reappointed Acting Head of Department (2013-2014). He has also served in several Departmental, Faculty and University wide Committees, among which are Chairman, Departmental NUC Programmes Accreditation Committee (2005), Chairman Departmental and Member University Grants Writing Committee (2006-2008), Staff Representative on the Departmental Appraisals and Promotions Committee (2006-2008) and (2010-2012). He has served as External Examiner to the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu (2008-2016).
Prof. Ngwoke lives with academic distinction. He bagged a Distinction Class in his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) Examination (1966) and re-enacted the feat in his West African School Certificate Exanimation (1974). His Doctoral Thesis is listed as a Ground-breaking Dissertation in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2005). That Doctoral Dissertation won him the Babs Fafunwa Foundation Post Doctoral Best Thesis Award (2006).  

He has to his credit one sole authored book (first published 1995); one sole authored online book Commissioned and Copyright (2010) by the National Open University of Nigeria for Open and Distant Learners of the University; one co-authored book (first published 2002); four book chapters (all in different aspects of Educational Psychology his area of specialization) and 62 learned journal articles.  His academic papers appear in various learned journals based in Nigeria, Asia, Europe and the United States of America.  

Prof. Dominic Ngwoke is an Educational Research Consultant, a motivator and a generational leader. As the Associate Dean and the Head of Sandwich Masters Degree of the Faculty of Education, he infused Project Proposal Defence into the M.Ed Sandwich Programme. That singular innovation helped to improve not only quality control but also the research skills of beneficiaries of the programme.  Also as the Chairman of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee he re-positioned the Faculty Doctoral Research. He improved the presentation format to capture the thesis of the Doctoral Dissertation in a schematic diagram. That elegant innovation has improved the depth and quality of doctoral research in the Faculty of Education. 

Prof. Dominic Ugwoke Ngwoke is a traditional family man. He is happily married. His family is blessed with five lovely children and a grand daughter.  His hobbies include: farming, reading, listening to jazz and classical music, seeking breaking news and humour, watching and analysing the global rat race. His political ideology: No permanent friend, only permanent interest. His life ideology: Put in more than you take away in any environment you find yourself.
